Rapid Maritime Connectivity Deployment for TOTE Services

Mission-Critical Connectivity on a No-Notice Timeline

When TOTE Services, Corp. needed to rapidly prepare the Cape San Juan for a U.S. Maritime Administration readiness exercise, there was no time for a conventional connectivity deployment.

The vessel was undergoing a Turbo Activation—a no-notice readiness exercise designed to test the speed and operational capability of the nation’s strategic sealift fleet. With crew scheduled to begin arriving aboard the vessel, TOTE Services needed to quickly address a critical gap: the vessel’s existing VSAT connectivity could not meet the demands of a modern crew and increasingly connected shipboard environment.

Tidal Ops was brought in to rapidly assess the vessel, deploy Starlink connectivity, and deliver a managed network capable of supporting both crew and operational requirements.

The Challenge

Legacy Connectivity Wasn’t Keeping Pace

The Cape San Juan’s incumbent VSAT solution was no longer sufficient for the vessel’s connectivity demands.

Crew members needed reliable, high-speed internet access for everyday communications, entertainment, streaming media, and video calls with family and friends. At the same time, the vessel required connectivity to support SCADA, operational technology (OT), and other critical shipboard systems.

These competing demands created a fundamental network challenge: how to dramatically improve connectivity without compromising critical operational traffic or exceeding the vessel’s available data allowance.

The timing made the challenge even more significant. With the Turbo Activation underway and crew arrival imminent, TOTE Services needed a solution that could be deployed in days—not weeks.

The Tidal Ops Solution

From Site Assessment to Operational Connectivity in 48 Hours

Tidal Ops mobilized a forward operating team within 48 hours to begin the deployment.

The team conducted an accelerated onboard assessment to understand the vessel’s physical environment, existing network infrastructure, coverage requirements, and operational connectivity needs.

Following the assessment, Tidal Ops deployed and commissioned a Starlink-based connectivity solution, including multiple wireless access points strategically positioned throughout the vessel.

Coverage where it was needed most

Access points were deployed across key areas of the Cape San Juan, including:

  • Ship’s bridge
  • Radio room
  • Engine room
  • Three crew levels

This configuration extended high-speed connectivity throughout key operational and crew areas of the vessel, providing reliable access where it was needed most.

Connectivity With Control

Increasing bandwidth was only part of the solution

Tidal Ops implemented network management and bandwidth controls to help TOTE Services make the most of its available connectivity. Critical traffic could be prioritized while crew internet usage was managed within the vessel’s subscribed data allowance.

The result was a more capable connectivity environment designed to balance operational requirements, crew connectivity, and bandwidth efficiency.

The Result

Operational in Approximately 48 Hours

The Starlink deployment was brought online within approximately 48 hours of the Tidal Ops team’s arrival, providing the vessel with a modern, high-speed connectivity solution during a time-sensitive readiness exercise.

The deployment immediately improved the onboard connectivity experience, with positive feedback from multiple crew members regarding internet speed and performance.

More importantly, TOTE Services gained a connectivity environment with greater capacity and significantly more flexibility for managing the competing demands of crew and operational traffic.

Connectivity That Moves at the Speed of the Mission

When conventional timelines are not an option

The Cape San Juan deployment illustrates a core Tidal Ops capability: rapidly delivering managed Starlink connectivity in demanding maritime environments when conventional deployment timelines are not an option.

By combining field deployment expertise, Starlink technology, shipboard network infrastructure, and active bandwidth management, Tidal Ops helped TOTE Services quickly modernize vessel connectivity while maintaining control over how that connectivity was used.

When the mission can’t wait, connectivity shouldn’t either.
